Chamber Member mentors winning team
Posted on: 06th July 2010New Chamber member Millicent Consulting Ltd attended the Finals of the Business, Accounting and Skills Education (BASE) as a mentor on Thursday 1st July 2010 at Aston University, Birmingham. The 22 teams competing were all the winners of regional heats conducted earlier this year. The BASE game is free of charge and open to all schools and colleges. The game is run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The teams are made up of six students from years 12 and 13.
This national business completion is designed to develop employability skills and introduce chartered accountancy as a desirable career path to the students.
This year the students had an assignment in two parts, the first was to prepare and comment on an income statement to the Financial Director. The second part was to make a proposal to the Board of the company on where and how to invest £1.3 million into the organisation. This had to be justified to the Board with explanations of any assumptions and information they had used.
David Ellis the Managing Director of Millicent Consulting Ltd., who attended the event on the company’s behalf said “I was really impressed with the way in which the team I was mentoring tackled these assignments; they had a large amount of data to go through in quite a short time. It had to be a team effort, areas were assigned to different team members then, the information was collated and the answers formulated. The presentation skills of these young people were excellent. They handled themselves very well and you could tell that winning the competition meant a great deal to them. “
