Fairtrade Fortnight - The Big Swap
Posted on: 10th March 2010
Fairtrade is an international organisation who campaigns for trade justice for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade seeks to address unfair trade methods which ultimately take advantage of deprived and poverty stricken farmers and workers in the developing world. The Fairtrade foundation empowers farmers and workers to provide for their families, contribute positively to their communities and improve quality of life.
Knowsley Council supports sustainability both locally and globally and is working to become a Fairtrade Borough in partnership with Fairtrade Knowsley, the local Fairtrade Steering group.
A new Fairtrade pledge scheme is being introduced for businesses to pledge to support Fairtrade by agreeing to sell or use two items of Fairtrade and join the steering groups email network. In recognition of this, the council in partnership with Fairtrade Knowsley will issue a certificate to congratulate businesses supporting Fairtrade.
This year’s campaign for Fairtrade Fortnight – The Big Swap, encouraged people to swap their regular products for Fairtrade. For a limited time only, Knowsley Council are distributing free Fairtrade tea club packs to businesses within Knowsley. If you would like to receive a free Fairtrade tea club pack or would like more information about the Fairtrade pledge scheme, please contact Kelly Paes, Environmental Sustainability Service on 0151 443 2819 or email kelly.paes@knowsley.gov.uk
